The Rotary Norton WRS588 remains one of the most recognisable and unmistakable motorcycles ever to race the Isle of Man TT. Preserved and campaigned by WizNorton Racing, it is celebrated for its unique rotary soundtrack, pioneering engineering and enduring place in TT history.
Ahead of the 2025 Classic TT, Michael Dunlop and Trevor Nation joined Tom Birchall in the WizNorton garage to look back on the extraordinary story behind the machine. Trevor reflects on first testing the Norton for Brian Crighton at Mallory Park in 1987, the modifications that helped him secure the factory ride, and the years spent developing the rotary alongside the Norton team during its famous John Player Special era.
The conversation also explores what made the Norton so different from anything else on the Mountain Course, from its huge torque and electric-like power delivery to the absence of engine braking and the constant search for the perfect setup. Michael shares his experience riding the same iconic machine today and reflects on the special connection it holds for him through his father, Robert Dunlop, whose success aboard the Norton helped cement its legendary status.
