The Lightweight lap record was smashed several times in this highly dramatic 2018 race, with various riders taking the lead throughout. After a high-profile retirement, the winner took home his 18th TT win, the third rider in the TT’s history to do so.

Derek McGee led the opening lap, the Irishman flying on his KMR Kawasaki, although it was close as his lead over Ivan Lintin and Michael Dunlop was just seconds.

As the race progressed, Lintin took the lead, to be overtaken by Dunlop only several miles later. Both Lintin and Dunlop smashing the old lap record in the process.

After one unfortunate retirement, the race became a two-way battle between McGee who was now exceling at the front, and Dunlop, who called on his additional experience around the Mountain Course to take the lead back once again.

The chase ensued to the very end, with McGee slashing the margin to just half a second in the final few miles! The finale saw the victor fly home, beating the old race time record by well over a minute. Second place wasn’t to be denied his own victory though, taking his first TT podium.
